The Australian Public Policy Institute (APPI) has launched the 2026 round of its Policy Challenge Grants, inviting expressions of interest for this unique program focused on research translation and policy engagement on critical issues facing Australian governments.
Now in its fifth year, the program has already supported more than 120 researchers across 28 projects, with over $2 million awarded in grants to address key public policy priorities of government.
In 2026, APPI is seeking project proposals aligned with three major policy themes:
- Breaking cycles of disadvantage and supporting economic dignity, including preventative and early-years interventions that improve participation in education, the economy and community life.
- Securing Australia’s domestic supply chains and supporting high-potential industries, including strengthening economic competitiveness and resilience across key sectors.
- Strengthening policy responses to the triple planetary crisis on biodiversity loss, pollution and environmental sustainability challenges.
Projects must be led by researchers employed at APPI partner universities and completed within 12–18 months. Successful projects will translate research findings into clear, actionable recommendations for government.
Up to $650,000 in total funding will be available in this round, with individual grants ranging from $25,000 to $100,000 to support applied policy research, research translation activities and engagement between academics and policymakers.
Expressions of Interest open 16 March 2026 and close 5pm AEST on 8 May 2026.
Researchers interested in applying can learn more here and submit an application through the APPI grants portal.
