APPI and the Australian Public Service Commission enhance strategic cooperation on public policy

The Institute has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Australian Public Service Commission (APSC) to strengthen collaboration and partnerships between the APS and the university sector. The Memorandum, signed in January 2025, fosters joint efforts to build public policy capabilities, share information and insights, and build networks for collaboration.

The Australian Public Service Commission looks forward to expanding its engagement with the Institute. The APSC strives to build a trusted and contemporary APS and position the public service for the future. This Memorandum of Understanding will foster greater cooperation with the Institute and their university partners to support expert exchange of ideas and knowledge.

Dr Subho Banerjee, APSC Deputy Commissioner and Head of the APS Academy

Established by the NSW Government and a group of leading universities in 2021, the Institute is an independent, non-partisan government and university joint-venture. The Institute is dedicated to supporting government in tackling their most pressing public policy challenges. This strategic partnership with the APSC reflects the Institute’s increasing cross-jurisdictional approach and the success of its partnership-based model.

The Institute and APSC share a core commitment to building capabilities for effective public policy development. The Institute's unique position, sitting between government and universities to better support policymakers, complements the APSC’s distinctive role to enhance APS capability to support the evolving needs of Australians. The Institute looks forward to working with the APSC to advance this objective."

Professor Peter Shergold AC, Chair of the Board

We are delighted to formalise our partnership with the Australian Public Service Commission, as a natural extension of our work to date and a reflection of our growth and demand. This partnership will more effectively position the Institute to provide cross-jurisdictional advice and knowledge exchange at the state and federal level, while amplifying the strategic policy capabilities of our government and university partners.
