The Institute has released “Leadership for Responsible AI: A Constructive Agenda for NSW.” The result of a Collaborative Project with policymakers and experts, the report outlines areas where NSW can take a leadership role in regulating and shaping the AI market while building public sector capabilities.
The NSW Government is widely recognised as a global digital leader, and the state benefits from 41 per cent of all Australian software and application programmers and 45 per cent of all Australian AI businesses. An effective agenda on AI is necessary for NSW to remain so – capable of attracting talent and investment in support of inclusive economic growth and ensuring technological advances deliver better outcomes for the state’s diverse communities.
The challenges posed by AI to the rights and interests of people and communities will require leveraging and improving existing laws and policies, and considering new regulations. The report outlines measures to ensure that AI development and use is representative, equitable, and ethically sound.
NSW can take important steps to drive the development and use of AI for the public good. This project demonstrates the critical issues policymakers are facing regarding AI, and the innovative approaches that governments at all levels can take to shape the market.

The Institute continues to work on some of the most cutting-edge policy areas in collaboration with our government and university partners, as this project powerfully showcases. The NSW Government has already made substantial progress in safeguarding its own use of AI, and now is a critical moment to go one step further. The policy opportunities outlined in this report could serve as an important catalyst for action not only in NSW but across Australia and abroad.
