About the partnership

Bringing academics to the heart of Autralia's most pressing policy challenges

The University of Sydney has been a partner of the Australian Public Policy Institute since the Institute’s launch in 2021, reflecting a shared commitment to harnessing research expertise to support better outcomes for people and communities.

This partnership aligns with the University of Sydney’s strategic focus on deepening policy engagement and ensuring its research delivers meaningful impact. Through APPI’s programs, including grants, fellowships and government-commissioned projects, University of Sydney researchers are contributing to rigorous, solutions-focused work on challenges such as housing, climate resilience and child protection.

The Institute's partnership model is absolutely unique… It opens the door to long-term relationships with policymakers that will enhance the work you do, elevate it to the next level and amplify key messages through a larger megaphone and a wider stage.

The university world has brilliant ideas, but often struggles with translating them into concrete policy solutions. By being a bridge builder, APPI is able to help my research to become more powerful and effective.

It was great working with the APPI team on the Policy Insights Paper and with our excellent colleagues across several NSW departments and agencies who workshopped this paper with us.

Contributing to The Policymaker offered a valuable opportunity to translate my research into actionable policy advice and stay focused on how academic work connects to real-world impact. The editorial process was collaborative and seamless, and significantly enhanced the quality of the article, which has since helped shape conversations with policymakers on building a more effective innovation system in NSW.
Clare Bartram

Working with APPI and the NSW Anti-slavery Commissioner on his inaugural strategic plan was a truly collaborative effort. It was an opportunity to see first-hand a deeply considered consultative and inclusive approach that meaningfully put diverse voices, and critically people with lived experience, at the heart of public policy responses to this systemic, complex human rights challenge.
