Prominent public sector leader joins Institute’s Board of Directors

The Institute has welcomed Peter Duncan AM to its Board of Directors from February 2024. Mr Duncan’s wealth of experience across government and industry will help to further advance the Institute’s mission and drive positive change in Australian public policy.

Mr Duncan has served in a wide range of leadership roles in the public sector, including recently as Acting Secretary of the New South Wales Department of Premier and Cabinet. In this role, he successfully led the transition and establishment of The Cabinet Office and Premier’s Department. Mr Duncan has worked in executive roles at the local, state and national levels in transport, infrastructure, forestry, parks, maritime, technology and services.

I am honoured to be joining the Institute's Board. Throughout my career and across a range of roles in the public sector, I have seen the power of smart collaborations in transforming lives and building a stronger, more resilient society. I look forward to contributing to its mission of transforming public policy through connecting leaders and policymakers with a wide range of experts.

Professor Peter Shergold AC, Chair of the Board

Mr Duncan is Chair of the Australian Rail Track Corporation, WaterNSW, and NSW Local Government Boundaries Commission, and a non-executive director of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. He was previously Commissioner and Deputy Chair of the Independent Planning Commission NSW, Chair of the Australian Road Research Board, and a board member of the Office of Projects Victoria among others.

A Fellow of the Institute of Public Administration Australia and a Companion of the Institution of Engineers Australia, he was conferred a Member of the Order of Australia in 2013 for service to public administration, conservation, and the environment.

The Institute was established in 2021 as a unique joint-venture between government and leading universities. The Institute works with policymakers across government to more effectively harness cutting-edge expertise and evidence for the public good. An independent, non-partisan policy institute with charitable status, the Institute operates under a robust governance framework that includes a dedicated, independent 7-member Board of Directors with government, universities, and independent representatives. Mr Duncan replaces Martin Bowles AO PSM, National Chief Executive Officer of Calvary Health Care (Australia), who completed his term on the Board this year.
